The advice you got above is sound: put a basic garrison in there yourself, so it won't be automatically taken back by your enemies. Even if a new lord is assigned quickly, they will not bother to fill the garrison in most cases. Since the King still has a number of fiefs to give away before he even considers putting a lord into the new castle, it might sit empty for a while. After taking the castle, there will be a default garrison (maybe?) put in there for the next vassal who gets assigned to it. Perhaps that is just a sign that it's best to move on or declare yourself a King? Otherwise, the idea is to improve relations with the other lords.

When that starts to happen, I don't really know how to deal with it. Hopefully, your King isn't losing his mind and indicting everyone you know and replacing them with your factions enemies. Relations points with your fellow npc lords are very important. With a little luck and trickery, you can fool the AI and get some of them to join you by changing direction suddenly, etc. Once they catch sight of the enemy, their status might change to 'Fleeing Scary Army' instead and they won't enter the battle.

It has to do with the spotting ability and the status displayed if they don't see the enemy, they won't run and if they are listed as 'Following Ita_Saga's army' they will show up on the battle field. You can trick them into fighting in battles if you are careful. So many npc lords are craven cowards that it can be difficult to get things done. Improving the engineering skill is how you fix that problem. With low skills, a siege can take so long that your allies take off before the battle even starts. If you are in charge and start the sieges, your skills will be used to determine how long sieges take, etc. There are a few tricks you can use to make life easier though. The thing is, when I get to that point, becoming a King tends to make more sense. I only take the Marshall role when I really feel the need to take direct control over my faction.
